What is Small Bladder Capacity and What is Normal Bladder Capacity? <\/h2>\n

\"\"Small bladder capacity<\/strong> refers to a situation when the urinary bladder cannot store an adequate amount of urine in the bladder.  Normally, urinary bladder can hold at least 300-500 mL of urine<\/strong> before a severe urge to urinate occurs. A moderate urge normally occurs after about 300 ml is in the bladder. When someone is in a situation where they cannot reach the bathroom easily, often bladder can store as much as 1 liter (1,000 ml) but with some obvious discomfort.<\/p>\n

Patients who have a strong urge to urinate when the amount of urine in the bladder is significantly less than 300-500 mL are considered to have small bladder capacity.  Men and women with small bladder capacity<\/strong> often have a sensation that they need to urinate as soon as the bladder fills, often with less than 100 mL of urine.  They often have a strong urge to pee to the point that they cannot hold any longer when the bladder fills to 150-200 mL which is less than half of what the normal bladder capacity is (300-500 ml).<\/p>\n

Small bladder capacity in men is most often a result of an enlarged prostate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of Small Bladder Capacity? <\/h2>\n

Most common symptoms of small bladder capacity are strong urge to urinate<\/a> as soon as someone drinks a couple of water or other fluids.  Frequent urination<\/a> and difficulty holding urine (urge to urinate) of the most common symptoms of small bladder capacity.  Bladder discomfort and pain<\/strong> may also occur when patients try to hold urine.  It is important to understand that these symptoms may also be caused by other problems and are not always caused by small bladder capacity.  Other causes of these symptoms include UTI, overactive bladder<\/a> and neurogenic bladder among others<\/p>\n

How Can Bladder Capacity be Improved?<\/h2>\n

Depending on the underlying cause of small bladder capacity, behavioral therapy and bladder training<\/strong> can improve bladder capacity in some patients. <\/p>\n

Medications<\/strong> such as Toviaz, Vesicare<\/a>, and Myrbetriq can also increase bladder capacity and work best in combination with behavioral training.  Tibial nerve neuromodulation<\/a>, sacral nerve neuromodulation<\/a> and Botox for the treatment of overactive bladder<\/strong><\/a> can also help increase bladder capacity in patients with small bladder capacity.  Occasionally, surgical treatment with bladder augmentation is necessary to increase bladder capacity typically in patients with neurogenic bladder.<\/p>\n
