New! Diagnostic and Therapeutic Cystoscopy: What You Need to Know

Cystoscopy, or examination of the urethra and the bladder, sometimes called cystourethroscopy, is the “gold” standard diagnostic procedure to evaluate the lining of the urethra and the bladder.

Cystoscopy examination can reveal inflammation, urethral strictures, prostate problems in men, bladder stones, and bladder tumors or cancers, among other abnormalities.

Cystoscopy can be performed in the office under local anesthesia; at the time of cystoscopy, a bladder biopsy and fulguration can be performed if necessary to biopsy suspicious-looking or atypical-appearing bladder lining or a bladder mass.

Diagnostic cystoscopy is typically performed in the office under local anesthesia. However, it can be performed under sedation or general anesthesia for patients who are unable to tolerate the procedure under local anesthesia. 95% of patients tolerate the procedure under local anesthesia, with mild or moderate discomfort.

Bladder Biopsy, Fulguration, and Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor

When a bladder tumor or a suspicious or atypical-appearing bladder lining is noted during cystoscopy, biopsy of atypical or suspicious-appearing bladder lining can be performed at the time of cystoscopy. The remainder of the abnormal-appearing bladder lining (urothelium) can be fulgurated.

When a suspicious-appearing bladder mass is noted during cystoscopy in the office, it is typically biopsied. Subsequently, the mass is resected in the operating room under general anesthesia.  Experienced urologists at New York Urology Specialists perform cystoscopies, bladder biopsies and TURBT surgeries.

What to Expect During Cystoscopy

Dr. Shteynshlyuger is an experienced urologist. New York Urology Specialists has the latest cystoscopy equipment, which makes the cystoscopy procedure experience quick and uneventful.  Cystoscopy requires preparation for 10-15 minutes; the procedure itself takes a few minutes; if a biopsy and/or fulguration is necessary, it may take an additional 10 minutes.  Most people have minimal pain but feel discomfort from having a full bladder, as the bladder is filled with sterile water during the procedure.

Cysview intravesical instillation is the latest innovation in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.  Usually, white light is used to visualize bladder tumors.  Some bladder tumors are large and easy to spot. Other bladder tumors especially CIS (carcinoma in situ) can be smaller, more subtle, and more difficult to see.  Blue light improves visualization of the “hard-to-see” bladder cancers and allows the urologist to perform a more thorough bladder cancer removal

Bladder cancer often recurs. Complete removal of bladder cancer can result in a lower chance of recurrence.

Did you know?  Dr. Shteynshlyuger has performed thousands of cystoscopy procedures and transurethral procedures, including bladder cancer resection (TUR-BT), bladder biopsies/fulgurations, ureteroscopies, and related procedures.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Cystoscopy, Bladder Biopsy, Bladder Fulguration, and TURBT?
