Why Does Penile Hematoma Occur?
A compressive dressing is usually used to minimize the risk of bleeding and hematoma formation after circumcision.
Hematoma risk is decreased with ShangRing circumcision. Injection of medications to create an erection during circumcision increases the risk of penile hematomas.
Treatment of Penile Penile Bleeding and Hematoma after Circumcision
Usually, bleeding after circumcision is minor (a few drops) and stops on its own with mild compression. Occasionally bleeding may be persistent and may require re-opening circumcision incision to control bleeding.
When a penile hematoma occurs, if it is not infected it may be managed conservatively with observation. For larger hematomas, exploration, and evacuation of hematoma is usually preferable as it speeds up the healing process.
Usually, for hematomas greater than 2 to 3 cm in diameter we advise timely evacuation of hematoma as that will lead to faster recovery and resumption of sexual activity. A large hematoma may take 3 to 6 months to resolve if not evacuated.
