Treatment of Multiple Stones in the Ureter and Kidney

For patients who have both ureteral and kidney stones on the same side, in some circumstances, simultaneous treatment of both ureteral and kidney stones is possible if treated with ureteroscopy with holmium laser.  This is particularly effective when both stones are less than 1 cm in size.  Larger stones may also be treated with laser lithotripsy during the same procedure.  This is particularly effective for patients with acute symptoms.

kidney stonesFor patients with minimal or no significant symptoms, ESWL shockwave lithotripsy may also be used to fragment kidney and ureteral stones.  Typically the ureteral stone would need to be fragmented first; kidney stone can then be fragmented in a few weeks.
