Who is a Candidate for Break Wave lithotripsy?
About 50% of patients who are candidates for ESWL lithotripsy are also candidates for Break Wave lithotripsy. Patients with small-to-medium-sized kidney, UPJ, and distal ureteral stones that are 4-7 are good candidates. Just as with any other procedure to fragment stones, patients should be infection-free.

The advantage of Break Wave Lithotripsy is the ability to perform the procedure in an office setting, without interruption to the patient’s day and with no special planning necessary, as the procedure is performed without anesthesia. Patients can eat and drink normally. The procedure takes less than 1 hour to do; patients can come to the office for Break Wave Lithotripsy without any specialized preparation or restrictions and can go on with their day right after the procedure. There are no restrictions on physical activity before or after the procedure.
How Successful is Burst Wave Lithotripsy?
; 88% had stone fragmentation (a measure of success); >50% had residual stones of <2 mm (typically can be passed without the patient being aware of it); and 70% had fragments <4 mm (again, typically can be passed without the patient being aware of it). The stone-free rate was 49% and improved to 58% with optimal settings.
