What is Intravesical Treatment with Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Therapy?

Intravesical therapy means that the therapy or medications are administered directly inside the urinary bladder using a temporary urethral catheter instead of the typical ways medications are taken by mouth or through injection into blood stream or muscles.

Intravesical treatment with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin has been shown to decrease the frequency of UTI in women who get frequent UTI (women who get 3 or more UTI per year).

What is the Evidence that Treatment with Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Sulfate Helps?

Multiple randomized controlled studies have shown that treatment with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate decreases the risk of urinary tract infections among women who are predisposed to frequent UTI recurrences.

Treatment can decrease the frequency of UTI by 70% and can lengthen the time to UTI recurrence from an average of 50 days to as many as 180 days.   Treatment also improves symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency and pelvic pain related to recurrent UTI.

What is the Reason for Using Intravesical Treatment with Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Therapy?

A glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer that covers the cells of the urinary bladder is thought to be damaged by recurrent UTI.  This allows an infection to adhere and predisposed to recurrent UTI.  Administration of these naturally occurring compounds inside the bladder can help restore and maintain protective mechanisms against re-infection.

How Many Bladder Instillations of  Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin are Given for Treatment of Recurrent UTI?

Intravesical treatment with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate is given once a week for 4 weeks and then maintenance treatment is continued once a month for 5 months.  After that evidence shows that continuing once a month maintenance treatment is likely to have a beneficial effect. Another option is to repeat treatment once UTI starts to return more frequently again.

What to Expect after Administration of Hyaluronic Acid in the Urinary Bladder?

Patients are advised to try to keep the medications in the bladder at least 2 hours. They can pee them out as they normally pee. These medications are safe and there are no special precautions about peeing them out.
