MonaLisa Touch Laser for Women with Post-Menopausal Urinary and Sexual Problems

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 laser that can be used for the treatment of postmenopausal symptoms in women, including vulvovaginal atrophy, also known as the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). MonaLisa Touch can help restore the vaginal epithelium, improve blood flow to the vaginal tissues, and improve lubrication. As a result, many women experience improvement in sexual function. This makes it an effective treatment for vaginal pain and discomfort. MonaLisa Touch can also help with symptoms such as vaginal irritation, itching, and burning with urination.

As many as 50 percent of women with vulvovaginal syndrome experience pain with sex as well as vaginal dryness and irritation. A randomized controlled study compared MonaLisa Touch CO2 treatment to estradiol treatment. CO2 laser treatment was shown to effectively treat pain during intercourse and decrease discomfort during sex as well as improve orgasm and lubrication in women. The study also showed significant improvement in dryness and vaginal burning.

What to Expect During and After MonaLisa Touch Treatment?

MonaLisa Touch laser treatment for the genitourinary syndrome of menopause is a painless procedure that is performed in the office and does not require any anesthesia. There is no special preparation necessary before or after the procedure. Patients who take aspirin can continue taking the medication as prescribed. At New York Urology Specialists, we advise women to use either a vaginal lubricant or an estrogen cream starting one to two weeks prior to the procedure.

The procedure takes less than 10 minutes to perform. The patient can go home and return to usual activities shortly afterwards. We advise no sexual activity for 10 days after MonaLisa Touch laser treatment and no use of any lubricants or any devices in the vagina for 10 days. A slight amount of discomfort may be present or an occasional drop of blood for the first few days following MonaLisa Touch. There may also be some irritation for the first day or two. It is okay to shower normally and eat and drink as usual before and after the procedure.

Recovery from MonaLisa Touch Laser: How Soon Can I Expect to See Benefits after MonaLisa Touch Procedure?

Most patients who undergo the MonaLisa Touch procedure experience a significant improvement in symptoms after the 2nd treatment, which is usually performed 1 month after the initial treatment. The 3rd treatment is usually done 3 months after the initial treatment. Some women may experience significant improvement in their symptoms as early as one to two weeks after the 1st treatment itself.

What Are the Risks of MonaLisa Touch CO2 Treatment?

MonaLisa Touch CO2 is a safe and effective laser treatment for GSM. The risks of the treatment are few. Some women experience minor irritation and bleeding as well as mild anal discomfort after the procedure. Some women may require a slightly longer recuperation.

What Are the Most Common Reasons MonaLisa Touch is Performed at New York Urology Specialists?
