Treatment of Urinary Problems in Women in New York City

Urinary Problems in Women

At New York Urology Specialists, our experienced urologists treat urinary problems that affect women of all ages. We treat urinary complaints in young women, pregnant women, and women who develop urinary problems as a result of menopause.

Urinary Pain

Pain or discomfort while urinating is a common complaint that brings women to New York Urology Specialists. In fact, dysuria (pain during urination) is the most common urinary complaint among women.

Causes of Pain During, Before and After Urination

Pain and burning with urination most often occur as a result of urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bacteria that enter the urinary tract through the urethra. Urinary pain can also be caused by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Other causes of pain during urination include kidney stones and overactive bladder. Irritation of the urethra during sex or activities such as bicycle riding or horseback riding may cause symptoms of urinary pain. Some women going through menopause experience vaginal changes that mimic dysuria.

Kidney Pain in Women

Kidney pain, renal pain, or flank pain refers to pain in the upper abdomen, sides, or back. It is usually worse on one side than the other. Many patients describe it as a dull ache, sometimes accompanied by other symptoms such as fever and urinary complaints.

Causes of Kidney Pain in Women

Flank pain in the area of the kidneys is often due to kidney stones, but may also be caused by other problems such as ureteral obstruction causing hydronephrosis, or as a complication of pelvic surgery in women, for example, hysterectomy. Flank pain can also be caused by a pulled muscle or herniation of a spinal disc pressing on the lumbosacral root nerves. Pregnant women may experience flank pain as a result of hydronephrosis (build-up of urine in the kidney), typically during the third trimester. Other causes of flank pain include kidney abscess, bladder infection, kidney cysts and kidney cancer.

Frequent Urinary Tract Infections

Recurrence of UTI symptoms following resolution of an earlier episode after appropriate treatment usually occurs due to re-infection by the same organism (most commonly E. coli bacteria). Frequent UTIs is a common problem among young, sexually active women as well as in older postmenopausal women.

Causes of Frequent UTI in Women

Some women are predisposed to recurrent UTIs. Frequent infections of the urinary tract are related to the frequency of sexual intercourse in some women. An abnormal urinary tract such as ureteral reflux and incomplete bladder emptying as well as hydronephrosis and kidney stones can predispose to UTIs and pyelonephritis. Risk factors for recurrent UTIs include maternal history of urinary infections, use of spermicide in the past year, and new sex partner in the past year.  Complicated UTIs are common in women with immunosuppression after renal transplant, chronic renal insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, and urinary catheter or intermittent catheterization.

Frequent Urination

Urinary urgency and frequent urination are common problems that affect women of all ages. Frequent urination is defined as needing to use the bathroom more than eight times a day or waking up in the night more than twice to urinate.

Causes of Frequent Urination in Women

Frequent urination may simply be from drinking too much fluid. Frequent urination and urinary urgency can also be exacerbated by diet, including caffeine and some acidic foods such as tomatoes. UTIs and sexually transmitted diseases can cause frequent urination and urgency. Overactive bladder is another common cause of frequent urination in women. Other causes include pregnancy, diabetes, interstitial cystitis, and stroke or other neurological problems that cause damage to the nerves in the bladder.

Urinary Incontinence in Women

Urinary incontinence (leakage) affects as many as 20 percent of women. Many women have a mild degree of urinary incontinence where they leak a few drops occasionally.

Millions of women have more pronounced urinary incontinence when they laugh, cough, and even walk. As a result, many women adapt by using liners or adult diapers. Fortunately, effective treatment options are available for stress urinary incontinence. Urge urinary incontinence (when a person is unable to get to the bathroom in time) is also prevalent among women of all ages. At New York Urology Specialists, our experienced urologists use the most advanced treatment options to treat urinary incontinence in women.

Causes of Bladder Control Problems and Urinary Leakage in Women

Loss of bladder control can occur in women of all ages.  Urinary leakage can occur with cough or physical activity such as jumping or running; usually, this is caused by stress urinary incontinence.  Another type of urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence occurs when women get a sudden urge to pee and cannot make it to the bathroom on time.

Certain foods and drinks such as alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, chili peppers, citrus fruits, and acidic foods may stimulate the bladder and have a diuretic effect. Certain medications used to treat blood pressure, muscle relaxants, sedatives are known to predispose to or exacerbate incontinence. Urinary tract infections and constipation may also lead to symptoms of incontinence.

Great follow ups
by on Mar 17, 2019

Overall, I am happy with the services provided by Dr. Alex and his office staff. They are second to none when regarding follow-ups and getting back to you promptly, which is definitely not always the case with specialists. Furthermore, living abroad, he has offered to continue to treat me via skype and through email, which has been hugely helpful considering the medical care where I live is not as comprehensive as in the United States.
