What are the Causes of Constant Urge to Urinate?

Urge to urinate often is a common problem experienced by women. Frequent urge to pee can occur in younger women as well as older women.

Most commonly, overactive bladder caused by hypersensitivity of the bladder causes frequent urge to urinate.  Small bladder capacity can lead to frequent urination as well.

Recurrent UTI and STIs (sexually transmitted infections) can cause urge to void in women.  Genital warts and herpes infections can occasionally cause urinary frequency.

Bladder cancer can also cause a constant urge to urinate as well as the presence of bladder stones or urethral catheter.

Evaluation of Women with Constant Urge to Urinate

In addition to a history and physical examination, the urologist makes a diagnosis based on the volume of fluids consumed, intake of alcohol and caffeinated beverages, the frequency of urination (day only or day and night), medications being taken, and other symptoms experienced. A urinalysis (microscopic examination of the urine) may be ordered to identify the cause of frequent urination. Other diagnostic investigations may include a bladder ultrasound, cystoscopy, and uroflowmetry.

Treatment of Frequent Urination in Women

The treatment for frequent urination and overactive bladder depends on the underlying causative problem. In diabetic women, keeping blood sugar levels under tight control can help control these symptoms. Other treatments for frequent urination include bladder retraining, dietary modification, and Kegel exercises. Our experienced urologists have extensive experience in helping women lead better lives. Effective medications (anticholinergic and beta-3 agonists) can help most patients.  Tibial neuromodulation can be used alone or in combination with medications to relieve the symptoms of overactive bladder.  Botox injection in the bladder detrusor muscle is a one-time treatment with a benefit that can last 8-12 months.  Interstim sacral neuromodulation is another great treatment option for many patients with moderate to severe symptoms.
