Treatment of Acute Prostatitis: What You Need to Know

Acute prostatitis is an infection of the prostate.  Prostatitis is a type of urinary tract infection which means that men may experience symptoms of urethritis and UTI such as burning with urination, pelvic pain, heaviness in the testis or scrotum, and abdominal discomfort. Pain in the perineal area between the scrotum and the anus is common as that is where the prostate is located.

We specialize in the treatment of penile pain, scrotal pain, testicular pain, kidney pain, pelvic pain and bladder pain, prostatitis, perineal, and prostate pain.  We also treat interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS)

Common Causes of Acute Prostatitis

  • Acute Prostatitis is most often caused by a bacterial infection of the prostate gland. Any bacteria that can cause a urinary tract infection can cause acute bacterial prostatitis.
  • Some sexually transmitted diseases can cause bacterial prostatitis. These include chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  • Bladder outlet obstruction or urethral stricture
  • The foreskin of the penis that cannot be pulled back (phimosis)
  • Injury to the area between the scrotum and anus (perineum)
  • Urinary catheter, cystoscopy, or prostate biopsy (removing a piece of tissue to look for cancer)
  • Men aged 50 or older who have an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) have a higher risk for prostatitis
