Optimal Approach to Treatment of Urinary Problems
At New York Urology Specialists, we take an evidence-based, scientific approach to treating urinary problems in men and women.
The first step is the patient evaluation. The history of urinary problems, when they occur, how long they have been happening, and any associated medical problems or medication use is important.
A physical exam often adds additional value to the diagnosis.
Diagnostic testing is important for establishing the function or dysfunction of the bladder. There are 2 components to urinary function: the ability to store urine and the ability to empty the bladder. Many symptoms can be caused by either the inability to store urine or the inability to empty the bladder. Because treatments differ, an exact diagnosis is important.
The following tests can help us with the precise diagnosis, which would then allow precise treatment of the problem. All tests are available on-site in our office:
- Pelvic ultrasound – helps to determine the bladder’s ability to store and empty urine
- Uroflow testing – helps to determine the efficiency of voiding, whether there is a blockage to urine flow
- Cystoscopy – helps to determine if there are anatomical abnormalities such as strictures, obstruction, inflammation, tumors or cancer, stones or bladder diverticuli.
- Urodynamic testing – helps to establish the function of the bladder detrusor muscle.
- Post-void residual – helps to determine if the bladder empties completely; routinely performed as part of pelvic ultrasound, or can be performed separately.
Treatment Options for Urinary Problems in New York City
Treatment options for urinary problems depend on the actual diagnosis. For example, infections are treated with antibiotics. If bladder cancer is diagnosed, stage-specific treatment for bladder cancer would be advised.
We offer surgical and non-surgical treatment options for urinary problems. Depending on the nature of the problem, a number of condition-specific treatment options will be discussed with the patient
- Medications for incomplete bladder emptying, frequent urination, and urinary incontinence
- Surgery for urinary obstruction, strictures, enlarged prostate in men, urinary incontinence, and bladder cancer
- Botox in the bladder for urinary frequency, overactive bladder, and urge incontinence
- Interstim Sacral Nerve Neuromodulation for treatment of urinary frequency, overactive bladder (OAB), and urinary urge incontinence
