What are Penile Pearly Papules (PPP)?

Penile pearly papules are non-cancerous, non-infectious tiny while bumps that measure 1–2 mm in diameter and usually occur circumferentially on the edge of the corona of the penis.  They may occur in a single or double row on the corona of the glans penis.

How Common are PPP?

Up to 30-35% of men have penile pearly papules.   Penile pearly papules tend to appear around puberty.  Penile pearly papules are more common in uncircumcised men but also occur in circumcised men.  It is not clear if penile pearly papules are more common in black men or if they cause more concern because penile pearly papules are more noticeable in black men due to skin color contrast.

Is it Necessary to Remove Penile Pearly Papules?

Penile pearly papules pose no health risks. Treatment of penile pearly papules is not necessary.   Some men are bothered by the appearance of penile pearly papules and choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons.

What Are the Treatment Options to Remove Penile Pearly Papules?

  • Surgical removal:  rarely performed – takes a long time to heal.

What Other Things Look like  Penile Pearly Papules?

A variety of other skin conditions may resemble penile pearly papules.  An experienced urologist can usually make a diagnosis by visual inspection. In very rare circumstances a biopsy is needed.

Are Penile Pearly Papules Caused by HPV?

Studies show that penile pearly papules are not caused by HPV (Human papillomavirus). It is rare to find the HPV virus in penile pearly papules.

Do Penile Pearly Papules Spread Sexually?

Penile pearly papules are non-infectious skin bumps. They cannot be spread to sexual partners.  They pose no risk to sexual partners.
