Genital Wart Treatment in Men: What You Need to Know
How do You Know if You Have Genital Warts?
Genital warts can appear as small lesions (bumps), they can appear as cauliflower-like little trees on the foreskin of the penis, anywhere on the penis and scrotum, lower abdomen, thighs, and perineum. They can also appear around the anus.
HPV is a very common sexually transmitted infection in both men and women. Not all HPV infections in men cause genital warts. Only certain strains of HPV are known to cause genital warts.

Treatment of Genital Warts
Genital warts can disappear occasionally on their own, they can grow bigger or they can stay the same.
There are many options for the treatment of genital warts including medications such as imiquimod cream, cryoablation, fulguration and surgical removal in the office or the operating room. None of these treatments cure an HPV infection.
Even after genital wart removal, the patient may still infect their partner even though there is no visible disease. It is not known how long and when the person continues to pose infection risks to their sexual partners after genital wart removal.
When one sexual partner is infected with HPV or has genital warts and the other does not it may be reasonable to consider HPV vaccination for the unaffected sexual partner.

Prevention of Genital Warts
Safe sexual practices can decrease the chances of HPV infection and the development of genital warts. However, condoms do not completely protect from HPV or from genital warts as a virus may be transmitted through the uncovered areas.
Vaccination is available for both men and women to decrease the chances of HPV infection. Gardasil is a vaccine that protects against HPV strains that cause genital warts and cancers in men and women. Gardasil is recommended for all men and women under age 45. It may be beneficial for certain older men and women.
Treatment of Genital Warts Caused by HPV virus in Men
Low-risk strains of HPV virus types 6 and 11 are responsible for 90 percent of genital warts in men and women. In men, the HPV virus can cause penis warts, warts on the inner thighs, warts on the scrotum (balllsac), and anal warts.
Treatment Options for Genital Warts for Men
The choice of treatment for genital warts in men depends on wart size, number of warts, the location of warts, cost, convenience, patient preference, and provider experience.
Doctors at New York Urology Specialists are experienced in treating all types of genital warts in men.
Surgical wart removal is a same-day office procedure that can be completed in a single visit of 20 to 30 minutes. It provides complete wart clearance with the lowest risk of recurrence.
In contrast, freezing (cryoablation) requires 3-4 visits for each wart and is less effective.
Treatment with creams, gels, and ointments can take up to 16 weeks for wart clearance. Moreover, topical medications are effective only in 40 to 60 percent of men and are associated with a higher risk of recurrence.
The experienced physicians at New York Urology specialists have substantial clinical training in wart removal. Schedule an appointment for genital wart removal.
Inner Thigh Warts in Men
For all kinds of genital warts, including warts on thighs in men, the most effective treatment option with the least risk of recurrence is complete removal of warts with surgical excision. Medications such as imiquimod or podofilox are also often effective.
Anal Warts, Scrotal Warts, Intraurethral Warts
Genital wart removal with a laser is recommended for extensive warts or warts inside the urethra. Surgical removal is the recommended treatment for anal warts as the application of creams is challenging. Treatment of scrotal warts may include scrotal wart removal with electrocautery or laser, wart freezing or treatment of scrotal warts with imiquimod or podofilox.
Warts Around the Penis
Experienced doctors at New York Urology Specialists may suggest circumcision if the many genital warts are on the foreskin or extensive warts are present. Penile frenuloplasty may be recommended if the genital warts are present on the frenulum of the penis. This is a minor surgical procedure to lengthen a tight frenulum.
If the warts are present around the penis or on the shaft of the penis, penile wart removal with electrocautery or laser is effective. Imiquimod cream or podofilox cream can also be used with good efficacy.
