What is Circumcision Revision?

Circumcision revision is a procedure designed to correct the appearance of the penis after a prior circumcision. About 5-10% of men experience problems after circumcision that may require correction.
At New York Urology Specialists, we have extensive experience with some of the most complex surgeries on the penis including circumcision revision.
We perform most circumcision revisions in our office under local anesthesia with quick recovery. Read what to expect before and after circumcision revision at New York Urology Specialists.

Reasons for Having Circumcision Revision
Many men who have been circumcised at birth or later in life are unsatisfied with the appearance of their penis.
Circumcision revision is a plastic surgery procedure customized to the anatomical needs of each individual patient to provide the best results. Circumcision revision can be performed in our office under local anesthesia or in a surgical center under general anesthesia.
Some men have very prominent stitch marks from prior circumcision; some men have ‘bumps‘ in the scar tissue that sometimes may cause pain, sensitivity or discomfort. Some men have too much skin left after circumcision, in other words, the circumcision is too loose, or the frenulum was not removed. Circumcision revision can often correct these problems. Still, other men had either too much skin removed which can make the penis feel tight with erections or developed ‘turtle-neck‘ or penoscrotal web after circumcision.
Penile skin bridges are another reason to have circumcision revision. In this case, the removal of penile skin bridges often solves the problem. Penile cysts can also infrequently occur within the circumcision scar. Depending on the size and location of penile cysts, cyst excision or circumcision revision can be performed.
At New York Urology Specialists, We Correct the Following Problems with Prior Circumcisions
Circumcision Scar Revision
Some men have uneven, very pronounced circumcision scar that may be very noticeable and desire to have circumcision scar removal. This is what is called a hypertrophic scar.
Some men feel chronic and constant pain, discomfort, or irritation of circumcision scar. Depending on the problem either medical treatment or circumcision scar removal may help with the problem.
Sometimes one side of the penis has excessive or uneven skin which can be corrected with circumcision revision. Excessive, wide and uneven circumcision scar edges can also be corrected with circumcision revision.
Incomplete or Partial Circumcision
Occasionally incomplete circumcision can cause trauma and pain during sex; occasionally we have seen phimosis-like appearance after partial circumcision. Some men experience poor hygiene as a result of incomplete circumcision. It is not uncommon for men to experience embarrassment or decreased self-esteem due to the appearance of the penis. As a result, men can experience difficulty in establishing and maintaining intimate relationships. We offer affordable correction of incomplete or partial circumcision in our office under local anesthesia.
Removal of the Frenulum of the Penis After Circumcision
Sometimes a very prominent frenulum, if not removed during circumcision or if only partially removed, can cause unsightly appearance or discomfort during sex. Some men have large and unsightly frenular skin on the underneath of the penis that affects the appearance of the penis and sometimes causes irritation and pain during sex. We offer frenuloplasty after circumcision as well as frenuloplasty revision. The procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort.
Types of Circumcision Revision
Circumcision revision is a surgical procedure performed to correct or improve the appearance of the penis and penile skin after a prior circumcision. The most commonly performed revision is the straightening of the circumcision scar or removing the excessive or uneven foreskin.
A more complex surgical procedure may be required in some men to correct the appearance of the penis after prior circumcision. This may require using advanced plastic surgery techniques such as flap rotation or grafting skin from other areas.
Reasons Men Choose to Have Circumcision Revision:
- improve the appearance of the scar
- remove excess foreskin
- hygienic reasons
Does Insurance Pay for Circumcision Revision?
Circumcision revision may or may not be covered by insurance coverage depending on whether it is for aesthetic reasons (not covered) or functional reasons (usually covered). We offer an affordable price for circumcision revision.
Cost of Circumcision Revision
