Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is a board-certified urologist in NYC who specializes in treating some of the most complex cosmetic problems of the penis in men. He has performed hundreds of adult circumcision, circumcision revision, and frenulectomy procedures. Dr. Shteynshlyuger performs circumcision as elective or cosmetic surgery as well as for medical reasons.
Many Men Desire to Have a Circumcision for Hygienic, Cosmetic or Aesthetic Reasons.
While many practitioners perform circumcision, it takes certain refinement of technique and experience to produce an excellent cosmetic appearance. There is a balance between removing too much and too little foreskin.
To improve the cosmetic appearance of the penis, Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger uses fine sutures in order to allow him to produce the best cosmetic result for our patients. Our patients are highly satisfied with the appearance of the penis after circumcision. It is important to remember that penis appears differently when it’s flaccid (non-erect) than when it is erect. In some men, the penis may double in length when erect. It is important to leave adequate foreskin to allow for an erection.
It is important to remember that in the first few weeks after circumcision, the penis may look swollen. Swelling subsides over the first 4-8 weeks. Scar appearance also tends to improve over the first 3-6 months. The final scar appearance varies from man-to-man due to the inherent genetic difference in how the tissue heals. Some men heal with larger scars; some with less scarring. We use a high-quality self-absorbing non-reactive suture to decrease inflammation and scar formation. Dr. Shteynshlyuger uses “plastic surgery” techniques to minimize scar formation after cosmetic circumcision.
Circumcision may also be performed to improve the appearance of the foreskin. Discoloration of the foreskin (depigmentation) caused by vitiligo (Michael Jackson’s disease) can often be successfully treated by circumcision to improve the appearance of the penis. Similar skin tags and other abnormalities of the foreskin can be removed during circumcision to improve the appearance of the penis.
Cosmetic circumcision can be performed in our office under local anesthesia. The procedure takes about 1 hour. Most men experience minimal pain after the procedure and many do not require pain medications after the procedure.
Safety of Circumcision under Local Anesthesia
To minimize the risks of circumcision, we perform circumcision under local anesthesia, which avoids the risks of general anesthesia. Further to enhance safety, prophylactic antibiotics are administered to minimize the risk of infection.
Logistics of Circumcision Revision
We routinely see patients from all boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island), Long Island, Westchester, and upstate New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
