Frenuloplasty of the Penis (Frenulectomy)
Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is a board-certified urologist in NYC who specializes in surgical treatment of some of the most complex penile problems in men. He has performed hundreds of adult frenuloplasty and circumcision procedures. He performs adult male circumcisions for cosmetic as well as medical reasons.
What is the reason that Men Have Frenulectomy or Frenuloplasty of the Penis?
Most commonly, tight or short frenulum of the penis is treated with frenuloplasty. Tight or short frenulum (called frenulum breve) can cause discomfort and pain with erections and during sex, can tear and cause bleeding from the penis during sex. Frenuloplasty is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for frenulum breve.
What is Frenulum Breve of the Penis?
Frenulum breve means short frenulum of the penis. Penile frenulum connects the foreskin to the glans of the penis (the head). When it’s too short it can cause pain with erections, tears and laceration, bleeding and penile bent.
What Kind of Anesthesia is Given for Frenuloplasty?
The vast majority of men choose to have frenuloplasty of penis under local anesthesia in our office. Most men experience no or minimal pain during the procedure. For men with severe phobia or anxiety, general anesthesia or sedation is available in a surgical center.
How long does Frenulectomy Take to Perform?
Depending on the complexity of the underlying problem as well as underlying anatomy, frenuloplasty can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes to perform under local anesthesia.
How Painful is Frenuloplasty?
We perform frenuloplasty and frenulectomy under local anesthesia in our offices. Local anesthesia involves an injection of pain medication around the penis. The patient is fully awake but does not feel or experience pain.
When we ask men who have undergone frenuloplasty under local anesthesia at New York Urology Specialists to rate the pain score on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being no pain, and 10 being the worst pain of their life, most men rate the pain with a score between 1 and 2. Most men do not require pain medications after the procedure but some take over the counter Advil or Tylenol.
Recovery Time After Frenuloplasty
Most men recover fairly fast after penile frenulectomy and frenuloplasty. Most men have minimal to no pain as we administer pain medication that works for 12 hours. Many men do not require any pain medications after the procedure, but some do. Most men in our practice are able to return to office work the next day; a job that requires a lot of activity may require taking a few days off, usually, a weekend is sufficient.
Men are allowed to the gym a few days later but should avoid any activities that involve the penis, in particular, bicycling for 2 weeks. We advise that patients avoid sexual activity for about 3 weeks or until the sutures come out completely.
For patients outside the New York City area (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Long Island, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx) same day consultation and frenulectomy are possible which would save you on travel and hotel stay. Patients who are traveling more than 3-4 hours may want to stay in a hotel overnight. Those patients who are traveling by car are advised that they should bring someone who can drive you back. For those men who are taking public transportation, most men are sufficiently comfortable to take public transportation (bus, train, metro) home.
