What is Local Anesthesia?
Local anesthesia refers to the administration of pain medications in the immediate area of interest to decrease the sensation of pain. With local anesthesia, the patient is fully awake but does not feel or experience pain as the area is anesthetized.
What is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia refers to the administration of anesthesia to the entire body, usually by injection of anesthetic medications in a vein. General anesthesia can also be administered using inhaled gases. General anesthesia affects the entire body by affecting the brain. With general anesthesia, the patient typically goes to sleep and does not remember anything afterward.
What are the Advantages of Local Anesthesia?
The advantages of local anesthesia are its safety. Because the medications do not affect the brain, the patient can breathe on his or her own. Because there is a minimal amount of medications in the bloodstream, these medications tend not to affect the heart rate.
What are the advantages of General Anesthesia?
The advantage of general anesthesia is that the patient is asleep and does not feel any pain. Many areas of the body can be operated on. Longer and more invasive surgeries can be performed under general anesthesia as there is a limit of how much local anesthetic can be safely given in a given period of time.
What is Better – Local or General Anesthesia?
When possible and safe, local anesthesia is preferred for most patients as it has the least risk of side effects. General anesthesia may be preferred in children and patients with high anxiety.
For most patients who require circumcision, circumcision revision or frenuloplasty, local anesthesia offers an excellent option.
For more complex surgeries, long surgeries and surgeries that require a significant amount of manipulation, general anesthesia is preferable.
