What is Loose or Lax Circumcision Style?
Loose circumcision style is a circumcision procedure in which sufficient foreskin is left so that circumcision does not feel tight when the penis is erect.
There is no standard definition of loose circumcision. As a result, “ loose circumcision” can mean different things to different people.
It is best to talk to your surgeon who is performing circumcision to explain what your preferences are and whether they are compatible with your medical needs and the surgical approach use for circumcision.
“Loose” Circumcision is a Subjective Description
Loose circumcision can mean “not making circumcision too tight” for some men when the penis is erect. It may mean leaving redundant skin so that the glans is partially covered with the penis is not erect. Because anatomy varies, some men are “growers” and others are “showers”, the amount of foreskin that can be removed depends on each patient’s skin characteristics.
The opposite of loose circumcision is a tight circumcision. Tight circumcision refers to circumcision with as much of redundant foreskin removed as possible, within reason, to allow for a full erection without much of extra skin when the penis is fully erect. Some men think or desire to have a ‘tight’ foreskin in a non-erect or flaccid state, which is difficult to achieve in most men and can lead to severe complications when the penis enlarges when erect.
Between loose circumcision and very tight circumcision, there is a full range of options as to looseness and tightness of circumcision. At one extreme of loose circumcision is a partial circumcision, where only a small amount of foreskin is removed for example to solve the problem of phimosis in men with phimosis.
It should be noted that for men who wish to have religious circumcision, bris, very loose circumcision does not qualify from a very strict religious perspective, as the foreskin needs to be below the corona of the penis when the penis is flaccid. Talmudic interpretations are a subject for discussion.

What are the Benefits of Loose Circumcision?
In general, there are no significant benefits of very loose circumcision or very tight circumcision. Leaving too much foreskin can cause irritation when the foreskin rubs against the glans, and may not solve recurrent balanitis if that is the reason for having a circumcision. On the other hand, very tight circumcision can cause significant problems with sexual function and may unmask penoscrotal webbing.
Loose versus Tight Circumcision
There are no significant benefits from either a very loose or very tight circumcision. For men who have difficulty keeping the condom on during sex making the circumcision “too loose” will not solve the problem with keeping the condoms on. On the other hand, making the circumcision “too tight” may create a set of other problems.
At New York Urology Specialists we have extensive experience treating men and individualize circumcision to each man’s anatomy to achieve “the golden middle”.
