What You Need to Know About Circumcision
Circumcision is a surgical procedure that takes about 1 hour to complete. You have a variety of choices to make when it comes to circumcision.
- The first choice you make is that of a surgeon.
- The second choice is whether you want to have it done in the office settings, surgical center or a hospital operating room.
- The third choice to make is whether to have circumcision under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
All circumcisions at New York Urology Specialists are performed by an experienced, Board-Certified Urologist. You have a choice of having it in the office, hospital or surgical center. Most men choose to have circumcision in our office under local anesthetic.
The Choice of Anesthesia for Your Circumcision
Circumcision can be performed under local anesthesia with the injection of the pain medication around the penis.
When circumcision is performed under local anesthesia, you are fully awake but should not feel pain. Circumcision under local anesthesia is performed under sterile conditions in the office settings. In our practice, more than 90% of men choose local anesthesia. Typically, on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain of your life, most patients rate the pain as 2 to 3 during circumcision.
Circumcision under IV sedation or general anesthesia requires the presence of an anesthesiologist to give the anesthetic. While sometimes this procedure can be performed in the office settings it is more common for this to be performed in a surgical center or hospital setting. If you choose to have your circumcision performed under general anesthesia, you will be completely asleep and should not feel or remember anything. There are small additional risks of general anesthesia that will be discussed by an anesthesiologist.

What type of Anesthesia Should you Choose?
In our experience at New York Urology Specialists, more than 95% of men choose local anesthesia for their circumcision. Typically a good penile block will allow for safe and nearly painless circumcision. Most of our patients report the maximum pain score of 1-3 out of 10, with 1 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain of your life. We can also offer you circumcision under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Typically, the only time we advise general anesthesia is for patients who have panic attacks or severe sensitivity (<5% of patients).bxo
In general, local anesthesia has the best safety record as you can breathe on your own.
What is Local Anesthesia?
Local anesthesia refers to the injection of pain medication in the area where the procedure is performed. With local anesthesia, the patient is fully awake but does not experience the painful sensation.
What is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia refers to the type of anesthesia that is typically given intravenously with the patient going into a deep sleep. Typically the patient does not remember anything after waking up and does not feel any pain during the procedure. The patient requires a machine to help them breathe during the procedure.
For young children and very anxious adults, IV sedation or general anesthesia is usually preferred as they may not be able to lie calmly and still for an hour that it takes to perform the procedure.
The choice of anesthesia affects the costs of circumcision. Circumcision under local anesthesia is the least expensive as it can be performed in the office setting which avoids the charges associated with surgical centers and hospitals. General anesthesia can add anywhere from $1000 to $5000 to the cost of circumcision for the cost of anesthesia and the anesthesiologist who provides it.
