Penile Cyst Removal: 28-year-old Man Treated at New York Urology Specialists
AL is a 28-year-old man with complaints of a growing cyst on the penis for the past month. He had noticed a cyst on the penis a few years ago, but it was not causing any problems. He was bothered by the cyst’s appearance but was told by a doctor previously that it should not be removed. More recently, he started having discomfort and pain. He has seen his primary care doctor and another urologist and was treated with antibiotics without significant improvement. He reports discomfort during sex and pain when the cyst is touched or when it rubs against the underwear.
A physical exam revealed a penile cyst that appeared to be infected.
The patient was evaluated. Treatment options were discussed. Given that antibiotics did not help with what appears to be an infected cyst, removal of the cyst was recommended. The patient was explained that the cyst could be removed easily in our office under local anesthesia. The procedure takes less than 1 hour to perform. Cyst removal is >90% effective in resolving pain symptoms that he experiences.
The patient chose to undergo penile cyst removal.
Follow-up Appointment – Cyst Removal
The patient returns for penile cyst removal under local anesthesia. Prophylactic antibiotics were administered to minimize the risk of infection. An injection of bupivacaine around the penis was given. Once the anesthetic started working, penile cyst removal was performed under sterile conditions.
The patient reported no pain during the procedure. He was able to go home 30 minutes after the procedure.
Follow-up Appointment – 2 Weeks After Cyst Removal
The patient returns for a follow-up visit 2 weeks after the procedure to remove an infected penile cyst. He reports no pain but has some discomfort from the stitches rubbing against the underwear. The area is healing well. The patient was advised that he can engage in sexual activity in 2 weeks.
Follow-up Appointment – 6 Weeks After Cyst Removal
The patient came back 6 weeks after the removal of the penis cyst. He reports no pain. He is very satisfied with the cosmetic results. He is able to engage in sexual intercourse with no change in sensation.
