Ureteral Stent Removal: What You Need to Know
A ureteral stent is an important safety mechanism for patients after kidney stone surgery (ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy, PCNL) that prevents blockage and helps stone fragments to pass. There are other reasons that ureteral stents are placed, such as obstruction from a mass, ureteral stricture, or UPJ obstruction. Once the underlying problem has been solved, for example, kidney stones have been broken, the ureteral stent can be removed. Ureteral Stent Removal
At New York Urology Specialists, we usually remove ureteral stents in the office under local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes overall, including preparation. The actual removal part of the procedure usually takes 5 minutes or less.
It is important that there is no infection before the ureteral stent is removed. A urine test is usually performed prior to removal; if necessary, urine infection is treated prior to stent removal.

As of 2023, the cost of cystoscopy with ureteral stent removal is $650 (CPT 52310). There are no additional anesthesia costs and no facility costs. Everything is included when performed in our office. Our office is certified as an Office Based Surgical Facility. We adhere to the highest standards of surgical sterility.
IV sedation anesthesia is available for an additional fee but in general unnecessary for stent removal. There are rare situations when the stent has been in place for a prolonged period of time, and the procedure needs to be done under anesthesia with more complexity.
