What is Penile Enhancement?
Penile enhancement refers to a variety of options. These may be cosmetic procedures such as injections of dermal filler to thicken the penis, removal of penile lesions such as penile pearly papules, penile warts, penile skin bridges, or circumcision. New York Urology Specialists offer these procedures.
Surgical procedures such as insertion of various grafts (fat transfer, synthetic grafts), Penuma silicone implant, and cutting of penopubic ligament are some of the other options that have been offered to men seeking “penile enhancement.” Please note that while we offer treatment for complications caused by these options, we do not perform them.
Mental ‘stress’ or concerns about penile size, scientifically known as body dysmorphic disorder, drive many men to seek penile enhancement. Some men objectively have thinner penis width or shorter than average size and seek treatment. Penile surgery does not help gender dysphoria.
What are Penile Fillers?
Many materials have been used as penile fillers. There are “permanent” types of fillers and temporary or resorbable fillers. Penile augmentation and enhancement procedures have been performed with fat transfer procedures, allograft (bio-compatible graft materials), silicone injections, PMMA injections, and hyaluronic acid injections, among others.
Currently, there are no FDA-approved fillers for penile injections. While materials such as Juvederm and Restylane are FDA-approved for use on the face, for example, they may be used off-label in other parts of the body. Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm / Restylane) is a ‘temporary’ type of dermal filler that can last anywhere from a few months to a few years. Silicone and PMMA injections are ‘permanent’ types of implant material that have been used as dermal fillers.
It is important to recognize that there is a lot of advertising promoting penile fillers. Not all of it is legitimate or truthful. “Penile enlargement” is one of the most popular searches in men’s health on Google. Clearly, many men are concerned about penile size or have curiosity about it.
It is important for men to understand what dermal fillers are, what they can achieve, and what they cannot help with.
It is important to recognize that an average stretched flaccid penile length: 12.5 cm +/-2 cm (5’’ +/- 0.8’’); an erect penile length: 12.9 cm +/- 2 cm. Many men who seek penile enlargement have average or even above-average penile size without realizing it. Often reassurance can provide a significant benefit. Many men suffer from erectile dysfunction or Peyronie’s disease, which can contribute to penile shortening.
Penile dermal fillers do not make the penis harder. If a man has a problem with obtaining and maintaining an erection, seeing a urologist for the treatment of ED is a good idea. ED can be a sign of serious medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, and low testosterone.
Penile dermal filler is injected just below the skin, typically between the skin and the underlying tunica albuginea of the penis, where erections happen.
What penile fillers do is to make the penis appear thicker when it is not erect. Dermal filler does not make the penis longer. The dermal filler is injected into the skin layers and makes the penile skin thicker. It does not make the ‘hard’ part of the penis that creates an erection wider or longer. Penile dermal filler can help with confidence by giving the penis a ‘thicker’ appearance. It does not help much with sexual activity. In fact, some of the common complications of penile dermal fillers make sexual intercourse difficult.
If a man decides to have a dermal filler in the penis, perhaps the best advice is “less is more.” Most complications are a result of over-aggressive injection trying to make the penis ‘too large.’ It is better to inject a smaller amount, and if a man feels that is not sufficient, add more in a few months. It is much easier to add than to remove.
The recovery after penile dermal filler is typically minimal. The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia with minimal or no pain. Men can go to work the same or the next day; however, it is important to abstain from sexual activity for 4-6 weeks until fully ‘settled’ and ‘healed.’
Penile Enlargement
Loss of penile length and girth can be caused by medical problems that cause erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and other causes. We offer specific treatments to counteract the loss of penile length, including non-surgical and surgical treatment. For many men, treatment of erectile dysfunction results in a desirable outcome.
For men who are concerned with penile girth, we offer a number of solutions, including filler injections, which may be helpful for some men.
Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm and Restylane) Filler Injections
Penile injections with hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) for penile width and girth enhancement. Hyaluronic acid is a safe temporary long-lasting injection that can be injected under the skin of the penis to thicken and widen the penile shaft in men who desire a safe, non-surgical penile enlargement option.
Scar Removal after Penile Injection, Penis Implants and Penile Augmentation Procedures with RPR, fat injection, silicone injections
Penile enhancement procedures such as various penile injections for improving penile girth (fat injections, silicone injections, AlloDerm, PMMA [Polymethylmethacrylate], etc.), Penuma implant can create scar tissue (granulomas) as well as less than optimal appearance. Men can also experience swelling of the penis, making it painful or uncomfortable to have sex. Infections are not very common but can occur. Penile shortening as a result of scar contracture and skin tethering, “attachment of scar to the skin” can occur.
We have experience treating complications after penile injections with fat, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injection phalloplasty, PMMA injections, as well as various penile implants. When necessary, penile scar removal and revision may be necessary to correct complications caused by scarring in the penis.
