Condoms and HPV: What You Need to Know

Do Condoms Protect Against HPV?

Using condoms can lower the chances of an HPV infection. But, condoms are not foolproof because they only cover a portion of the genitalia. You can also decrease the chances of getting genital warts by avoiding unprotected sex with many different partners.

Sexual intercourse with people who have a history of genital warts or who have not been vaccinated for HPV should also be avoided to lower your risk of genital warts.

Talk to our specialists about STD testing and treatment for other sexually transmitted infections because the presence of other STIs increases your risk of HPV warts. It is also a good idea to defer becoming sexually active until you are older because sexual activity at a young age is a predisposing factor for HPV infection.

Where to Get Tested for HPV in NYC?

At New York Urology Specialists, we offer same-day HPV testing and genital wart treatment for men and women.

We also perform comprehensive STD testing for other infections. We offer confidential appointments. Our prices are affordable with or without insurance.  Call/text today: 1-646-663-4125 or make an appointment online.

How Effective Are Condoms Against HPV? Will Using a Condom Protect Me from Genital Warts?

Condoms are only partially effective in reducing the risk of HPV infection. HPV is transmitted through close contact of skin and internal surfaces or secretions. An HPV infection can be present in the male and female genital areas that are protected by a condom as well as in areas that are not covered by the condom.

Correct and consistent use of condoms can reduce the risk of genital warts and cervical HPV infection but it does not provide complete protection. The use of condoms is not a substitute for regular health checks and Pap smears.

The use of condoms is not a substitute for the HPV vaccine.  HPV vaccination with Gardasil-9 is the most effective way to prevent HPV-related infections including those that cause genital warts and cervical cancer.
