MonkeyPox: What You Need to Know
Monkeypox is a new infection in the United States and Europe but has been present in some parts of Africa for many years.
For most patients, Monkeypox is a minor infection with no long-term repercussions. For some people, Monkeypox can cause severe illness to the point of requiring hospitalization and death.
Is Monkeypox an STD/STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection)?
Monkeypox can be transmitted through sexual contact (oral, vaginal, and anal sex). Monkeypox can be transmitted through non-sexual contact with skin lesions, through kissing, and through other close contacts.
What are the Symptoms of Monkeypox?
Symptoms of Monkeypox vary from person to person. In general, 1-2 weeks after infection, vague flu-like symptoms such as fever, malaise, headache, and weakness may appear.
Lymph node enlargement (neck, armpits, groin) may occur. This is known as lymphadenopathy, an immune response to the infection with Monkeypox.
After infection, there is an incubation period of roughly 1-2 weeks. The development of initial symptoms (e.g., fever, malaise, headache, weakness, etc.) marks the beginning of the prodromal period.
Next, small bumps/skin lesions may appear anywhere on the body but typically would occur at the place of initial infection, such as genitals (penis, groin, scrotum, anus in men; labia, groin, vagina, anus in women). These lesions can also occur on the hands, palms, soles, and other parts of the body. The skin lesions typically cause pain initially and later itching. Skin lesions progresses through four stages—macular, popular, vesicular, to pustular. At the end of the process, the skin lesions scab over and resolve. The rash usually heals within 2 weeks.
You can transmit Monkeypox to others as long as your skin lesions remain, usually 2-3 weeks after the infection.
Shortly after the prodrome, a rash appears. Lesions typically begin to develop simultaneously and evolve together in any given part of the body. The evolution of
The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.
