Gardasil-9 For Adult Men Older Than 45 Years Old

Benefits of HPV Vaccination in Men Over Age 45

The CDC recommends Gardasil-9 in men up to the age of 45. However, age is a proxy for the number of sexual partners. Studies show that the vaccine works best in men and women who have had few sexual partners. Men in their 30s and 40s with a limited number of lifetime sexual partners can benefit from the HPV vaccine as much as younger men.

For example, let’s say a man who married his high school sweetheart and has been in long-term relationships with only three or four-lifetime sex partners is getting divorced in his 30s or 40s. The Gardasil vaccine would provide protection against HPV infection from new partners when he gets back in the dating game.

Evidence suggests that men who are older than 30 or 40 years old can benefit from HPV vaccination.  In addition, evidence suggests that even men with a history of genital warts and HPV infection may derive some benefit from HPV vaccination. It appears that the Gardasil-9 HPV vaccine can suppress or eliminate the HPV virus in 20-30% of patients.

Why is it Difficult for Older Men to Get Gardasil-9 Vaccination?

Some doctors do not offer Gardasil to men over 45 because it is not covered by insurance. There is also a lack of awareness about how the HPV vaccine can benefit men above age 45. Some of the benefits of Gardasil in older men above 45 include:

  • Prevention of HPV infections in men with one or two-lifetime sexual partners
  • Possible decreased risk of genital warts in men with multiple sexual partners
  • Possible reduced risk of recurrent genital warts in men with frequent recurrence
  • Possible decreased risk of penile precancerous changes and penile cancer as well as oral and anal cancers.
  • Possible reduced risk of infecting sexual partners

At New York Urology Specialists, we offer Gardasil-9 HPV vaccine to men of all ages. Talk to our experienced physicians today to find out how it can benefit you. You can schedule an appointment online or contact us.
