What is Paraphimosis?
Paraphimosis refers to the foreskin over the penis that has been pulled back and cannot be pulled into its normal position because of swelling. Paraphimosis can be a dangerous condition. It can cause pain penile swelling and even penile gangrene. Paraphimosis requires emergent treatment.
The most common treatment options for paraphimosis include an attempt to reduce paraphimosis, dorsal slit procedure or circumcision.
What are the Symptoms of Paraphimosis?
Symptoms of paraphimosis include:
- inability to pull the foreskin forward over the penis
- swelling of the foreskin
- pain in the foreskin / penis
- discoloration of foreskin
What are the Risks of Paraphimosis?
Paraphimosis can lead to severe scarring of the foreskin which may necessitate circumcision to fix it. Paraphimosis can also lead to severe strangulation of the penis and penile necrosis (death of the penis).
Untreated paraphimosis can also lead to infection.
Paraphimosis is an emergency and urgent treatment is necessary to prevent complications.
Treatment of Paraphimosis
The most effective treatment for persistent or long-standing paraphimosis is circumcision. Other options for the treatment of paraphimosis include an attempt to reduce paraphimosis and dorsal slit procedure.
