Local Anesthesia for Shang Ring Circumcision.
ShangRing circumcision is a minimally invasive circumcision method that offers a number of benefits to patients including fast procedure, sure healing time, less inflammation and can be performed under local anesthesia.
At New York Urology Specialists we offer 2 options for patients who undergo Shang-Ring circumcision.
ShangRing Circumcision under Local Anesthesia with Penile Block
The first option for local anesthesia during ShangRing circumcision is a penile block with bupivacaine. This is a commonly performed procedure at New York Urology Specialists. A penile block is the preferred option for most patients because it offers excellent pain control with most patients having minimal to no pain during the first 24 hours after the procedure. Most patients do not have any significant pain during the recovery period.
Our goal is to offer safe and pain-free circumcision to all patients. It is important to understand that topical anesthetic cream may not always work and for some patients penile block becomes necessary.
ShangRing Circumcision Using Topical Anesthetic Cream
One option is to use an anesthetic cream that is applied to the penis for 15-30 minutes prior to ShangRing circumcision without doing an injection of pain medication around the penis. This appeals to patients who are afraid of needles. The limitation of anesthetic cream is that it wears off fairly fast (within a few hours) and does not provide as long a duration of anesthesia as obtained with penile block injection. Anesthetic cream does not provide as effective and predictable anesthesia as does a penile block and is not offered at New York Urology Specialists for that reason.
Typically, after penile block patients feel no pain for anywhere from 8-24 hours. This is the preferred option in children as it avoids needlesticks and still offers a long duration of local anesthesia.
