Prostate Ultrasound: What You Need to Know
Prostate ultrasound is performed in our office. The prostate ultrasound takes 10 to 15 minutes to perform with minimal discomfort.
We use high-resolution Siemens and GE ultrasound machines that produce the highest definition images possible.
Prostate ultrasound is useful in evaluating problems related to the prostate and pelvic floor including pelvic pain, urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, prostatitis, prostate abscess, and hematospermia.
Prostate ultrasound is also used for guiding prostate biopsy used to evaluate men for prostate cancer.
For men with prostate cancer, prostate ultrasound is used to guide placement of periprostatic gel prior to initiation of prostate radiation which can decrease the risks of rectal side effects.

Preparation for Prostate Ultrasound.
In general, no preparation is necessary for a prostate ultrasound. Having a bowel movement prior to ultrasound is helpful, especially in patients with chronic constipation.
Patients that are scheduled for a prostate biopsy or invasive procedure along with prostate ultrasound are asked to perform an enema prior to the procedure.
