What are the Symptoms of Herpes in Men?

Many men with herpes do not have any symptoms.  This is also true of women.  Many women who are infected with herpes do not have any symptoms.  It is important to know that if someone is infected with herpes they can infect others even when they do not have any symptoms themselves.

The most common symptoms of herpes in men are burning or itching on the penis or genital area. Small blisters can appear anywhere on the penis, foreskin, or glans.  When symptoms appear they usually take 2  to 14 days to manifest themselves.  When blisters appear, people refer to this as “breakout”.  In some people, breakouts can be very frequent – every few months or even more often; in others they may occur once or twice a year or even less often.

Genital herpes can also occur around the mouth or the rectum.  The blisters eventually ‘crust-over’ and cause painful sores that usually take a few weeks to heal.

Genital blisters and sores on the most common symptoms of genital herpes in men and women.  Oral herpes can also occur.

Treatment for Genital Herpes

There is no cure for genital herpes.  Treatment is aimed at alleviating symptoms and prevention of frequent symptom recurrence or ‘outbreaks”.  Medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are available for the treatment of symptomatic genital herpes including blisters and sores. Medications are available to decrease the frequency of genital herpes outbreaks and to decrease the risk of transmission of herpes to sexual partners.

Prevention of Genital Herpes

Safe sex practices are the best way to prevent genital herpes.  Condom use does not completely protect against genital herpes as a virus may be transmitted in areas not covered by the condom.

Currently, there is no vaccination to protect from genital herpes.  The only currently available vaccine that protects against an STD is a vaccine against the HPV virus, Gardasil-9.

Testing for Genital Herpes.

Blood tests are available to test for genital herpes.  Other methods of testing are available but are not as reliable.
