Syphilis in Men: What You Need to Know

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. It can be transmitted between heterosexual as well as homosexual partners.

Syphilis is one of the most potentially dangerous sexually transmitted diseases, similar in severity to HIV in many ways, because if it is not treated it may cause symptoms and infection in virtually any part of the body (secondary and tertiary syphilis).

Symptoms of Syphilis in Men

The most common symptom of syphilis in men is a painless ulcer on the penis, called ‘chancre”. It often heals on its own after a few weeks. Unless appropriately treated, the man will still have an infection after the ulcer heals.

Testing for Syphilis in Men.

A blood test called “RPR” is used to detect syphilis infection in men.  We offer same-day testing for syphilis and comprehensive same-day STD testing for other STIs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, HIV and hepatitis C.

Where to Get Tested and Treated for Syphilis in NYC?

At New York Urology Specialists, we offer same-day syphilis testing and treatment for men and women.

We also perform comprehensive STD testing for other infections. We offer confidential appointments. Our prices are affordable with or without insurance.  Call/text today: 1-646-663-4125 or make an appointment online.

Treatment of Syphilis Infection in Men.

Early detection and treatment of syphilis with antibiotics can prevent complications of secondary and tertiary syphilis which can include neuro-psychiatric complications, heart problems and many other symptoms.

We offer effective treatment with CDC-recommended antibiotic, Penicillin-G for treatment of syphilis infection in our offices.

You can find pictures of genital syphilis as well as before and after treatment images in our genital syphilis image gallery.

What Else Do You Need to Know?

Men and women who are at risk for syphilis or who have been diagnosed with syphilis are also at risk for other sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to have comprehensive STD testing.
