Scrotal Hydrocele Repair and No-Scalpel Vasectomy.

Vasectomy and HydroceleA scrotal hydrocele is a common problem for men.

A man with scrotal hydroceles who desired to have a vasectomy may choose to have hydrocelectomy (hydrocele repair) and a vasectomy procedure performed together.  Recovery after the combined procedure is the same as after hydrocelectomy; most men are able to return to work and regular activity within 1-2 days.

If hydrocelectomy is performed on both sides, then traditional vasectomy can be performed through the same incision used to remove the hydrocele.  If hydrocelectomy is only performed on one side, a traditional vasectomy can be performed on that side and no-scalpel vasectomy can be performed on the opposite side.  Often, we are able to perform a vasectomy on both sides through the same incision that we are using for one-sided hydrocelectomy.

No-Scalpel Vasectomy in Men who had Prior Scrotal Hydrocelectomy.

For men who desire to have a no-scalpel vasectomy and who had a prior hydrocelectomy repair, a no-scalpel vasectomy can be successfully performed most of the time.

For men who had a recent hydrocele repair, we prefer to wait 2-3 months for inflammation to settle before performing a no-scalpel vasectomy.  Occasionally, men who had very large hydroceles and have thickened scrotal skin a traditional vasectomy may be performed instead of the no-scalpel procedure.
