Why Out of Network?

Many patients wish to come to New York Urology Specialists for a second opinion or initial evaluation of complex urological problems to take advantage of the highest quality urology care that we offer.   Many patients are surprised when they are told that we are not in-network with their insurance.

Our goal is to be as transparent as reasonable and to provide the highest quality and highest value urology care to our patients.

We often get a question: “I have a great insurance policy, why don’t you take it?”

The answer to that question is a bit complex but it comes down to the fact that many “top insurance” companies offered us in-network rates that are too low for us to accept. As you can see from our self-pay prepaid rates, we offer some of the most reasonable rates and perhaps one of the best values in the country for our services.  Running a medical practice is expensive with high malpractice costs, many regulations, and high overhead. In addition, each insurance company imposes its own high-overhead costs on medical practices that contribute no value to anyone (unnecessary pre-authorizations, intentionally confusing benefits that no one can understand even with multiple graduate degrees that require spending hours on the phone to figure out, etc).

We have offered to join as an in-network provider to every major health insurance company.  However, the insurance companies that are currently out-of-network with us have offered to pay us at rates that do not cover the cost of high-quality care. The rates we were offered are often much lower than Medicare rates, which typically do not cover the cost of care, especially in a high-cost area such as New York City. In fact, many ‘good’ insurance companies have offered us rates that are equivalent to Medicaid rates and much lower than what they pay to other large but not necessarily high-quality providers in the area that accept your insurance.

In fact, even when going out-of-network or paying out-of-pocket for our services, you might actually save compared to going to many in-network providers.
