Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease in both men and women.  Because many people have no symptoms, you can get infected by a partner who does not know that he or she has chlamydia.

Symptoms of Chlamydia in men

Most men who are infected with Chlamydia do not have any symptoms and can transmit the infection to their partners without knowing it.  It is estimated that only 10% of men who are infected with Chlamydia develop any symptoms.

Some men may develop urethritis. Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra; typical symptoms include difficulty with urinating, burning with urination or blood during urination.  Men may also develop proctitis (inflammation of the rectum) as a result of Chlamydia infection.  Pharyngitis can occur after oral sex.  In women, chlamydia infection is usually asymptomatic but can cause vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and problems with getting pregnant.

Testing for Chlamydia Infection in Men

Effective tests are available to test for chlamydia in men.  While urethral swab can be used to test for chlamydia; a less invasive option is to simply test a urine specimen.

What Else Do You Need to Know About Chlamydia Infection in Men?

Men who are at risk for chlamydia are also at risk for other sexually transmitted diseases and should also be tested for gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV at a minimum. At New York Urology Specialists we also test for hepatitisureaplasma and mycoplasma infections.

Sexually active men are also at risk of getting HPV (human papillomavirus) infection, a common STD.  The HPV vaccination is available and recommended to all adult men under age 45. Men older than 45 may also choose to get vaccinated.
