Foreign Bodies in the Urinary Tract: What You Need to Know

Sometimes, foreign bodies made of metal, plastic, rubber, or other materials are either inserted accidentally or intentionally in the urethra or the urinary bladder; occasionally such items are also inserted in the penis, either the Glans Penis, shaft or under the skin.  Less often, they are inserted surgically and migrate, erode into the urethra or the urinary bladder, or cause other complications that require their removal.

Foreign objects, which may include jewelry, piercings, or   other body decorations (beads, or other items may cause urinary obstruction, infection, discomfort, and other side effects or complications.

Removal of foreign bodies from the urethra, bladder, or the penis becomes necessary as they may cause permanent damage to the urethra, urethral stricture, infection, bleeding, urinary retention or difficulties with urination, as well as UTIs.

How are items inserted into the Urethra or the Bladder Removed?

At New York Urology Specialists, we use innovative minimally invasive treatments to remove items that were inserted into the urethra or the bladder.  When necessary, open, percutaneous, robotic, or laparoscopic surgery techniques are used to retrieve items that migrated into the urethra or the urinary bladder.  The exact approach can only be determined after an in-person evaluation.  Our extensive experience allows us to remove some items that were inserted into the urethra or the bladder under local anesthesia in the office settings, in our in-office Surgical Suite.  For select patients, in-office anesthesia may be administered. These procedures are also performed under general anesthesia in our affiliated surgical centers and hospitals.

Recovery after Removal of Urethral and Bladder Foreign Objects.

Recovery depends on the severity of the problem and the surgical approach necessary to address it. In general, most patients can return to work within a few days.  Some patients may require a urethral catheter for a few days to a few weeks.
