What are the Causes of Split Urine Stream in Men with Enlarged Prostate?

Split urine stream occurs when urine flow splits and goes in different directions.  This can cause inconvenience and embarrassment as the urine does not hit the urinal or toilet but goes all over the place.  Beyond embarrassment, a split urine stream may be an indication of the underlying urinary tract problem.

Split urine stream can be accompanied by a very strong stream or inconsistent urine flow.  Some men have discomfort in the lower abdomen and urge to urinate while other men do not have these symptoms.

Split urine stream and dribbling often occur together.  Sometimes urination may be intermittent and men may need to push to empty their bladder.  While usually there is no pain with urination, occasionally men may experience burning while peeing.

There are numerous causes of the split urine stream in men.  Split urine stream occurs only occasionally, a few times a year or less, there is likely little to worry about.  On the other hand, if a split urine stream is constant or occurs most of the time, urological evaluation is advisable.

Common causes of split urine stream include urethral stricture, meatal stenosis, enlarged prostate, high voiding pressures due to overactive bladder or obstructing prostate.

Treatment  for Split Pee Stream in Men

The choice of treatment for a split urine stream is determined by the underlying problem.  There is a urethral stricture, treatment of urethral stricture is undertaken depending on its length and severity.  The problem was related to enlarged prostate obstructing urine flow, medications or a surgical procedure for enlarged prostate usually alleviate the symptoms.

Occasional Split Urine Stream: Is there a Need for Concern?

Split urine stream occurs rarely, only a few times a year, most likely there is no significant underlying problem that would be found during evaluation in particular if the patient is young.  In older men, the likelihood of finding an underlying problem is higher.

What are the Risks of if the Urinary Stream is Split?

If a split urinary stream is caused by an underlying urethral stricture or enlarged prostate, the stricture can lead to incomplete bladder emptying or urinary retention.  Over time, the bladder can be damaged to the point that it will not contract to empty the urine out.  Urinary retention with high voiding pressure can also cause irreversible damage to the kidneys over time.
