Advantages of Urolift Procedure
One of the most attractive features of the Urolift System for treating an enlarged prostate is that both younger and healthy men, as well as very old and very sick men, can be treated with similar good results.
It is important to recognize that the success of the Urolift procedure depends on patient selection for this procedure. In other words, the procedure is more likely to work if it is offered to the ‘right’ patient.
Who is a Good Candidate for Urolift:
- Men with mild to moderate symptoms of BPH for whom medications such as Flomax, Cialis daily (tadalafil), Uroxatral, Proscar (finasteride) do not work or stopped working.
- Men with mild to moderate symptoms of BPH who do not wish to take daily medications.
- Men with moderate or severe symptoms of BPH who are too ill or frail to undergo other treatments.
- Men with symptoms of BPH caused by lateral lobes of the prostate with mild or moderate median lobe enlargement.
- Men with normal renal function.
- Men with mild to moderate post-void residual < 200 ml
This is not an exclusive list. Based on studies and experience, we know that Urolift works well for men with symptoms and characteristics listed above. Urolift may be beneficial to some men with other symptoms and characteristics, but its use has not been well studied in situations such as urinary retention or high post-void residual or in a situation where men have prostate cancer affecting their urination.
Men with prior prostate procedures that stopped working, such as prostate microwave therapy, TURP, Greenlight laser, may also be candidates for Urolift if there is regrowth of the prostate tissue.
Men with Bladder Stones
Many men who have an enlarged prostate and bladder stones are good candidates for the Urolift procedure. Typically, the bladder stones need to be broken and removed. After the patient is free from bladder stones, the Urolift procedure can be performed.
Men with Prostate Cancer
Many men with prostate cancer who have been treated with prostate radiation experience symptoms of an enlarged prostate. If they do not experience radiation-induced bleeding, many men with prior prostate radiation may be candidates for the Urolift procedure.
Rezum procedure is another alternative for many men with prostate cancer who are either managed with active surveillance of prostate cancer or were treated with radiation in the past.
Who is not a Good Candidate for the Urolift Procedure?
For some men, the Urolift procedure is unlikely to provide the desired results. Men with renal insufficiency as a result of enlarged prostate and urinary retention are better served by prostate procedures that provide maximum benefit and remove prostate tissue, such as prostate enucleation or prostate Aquablation.
Men with bleeding from the prostate due to a large prostate are best served by removal of the bleeding tissue with procedures such as the HOLEP procedure, Greenlight procedure, or bipolar TURP.
