Medications for Treatment of BPH and Enlarged Prostate

Typically, the first treatment option for men with enlarged prostate includes one or more medications such as Flomax, Uroxatral, Proscar, Rapaflo, Jalyn, or Avodart.  In addition, medications such as Vesicare, Enablex, Detrol, Enablex, and Toviaz may be used for symptoms of frequent urination.  These medications need to be taken daily and lifelong.

Medication Side Effects

The most common side effects of medications for BPH are related to sexual function. Medications such as Flomax, Rapaflo, Jalyn, and Uroxatral can cause retrograde ejaculation when no semen comes out during ejaculation.  They can also cause dizziness and sleepiness during the day.   Medications such as Proscar (finasteride), Jalyn, and Avodart can cause erectile dysfunction in a small number of men and decrease the amount of semen produced.  They also affect the ability to have children.

A New Treatment Option for Men Instead of Medications – Urolift

Urolift System for BPH is an office procedure performed under local anesthesia in less than 1 hour. It opens up the urethra by pulling the prostate away.  Urolift is a one-time procedure that is very effective for the treatment of symptoms of BPH in men.  Many men who take medications for BPH can instead have a one-time procedure.

Side effects of Urolift System for BPH compared to Side Effects of Medications for Enlarged Prostate

Highest quality scientific studies compared Urolift to placebo or “sham” treatment. It revealed that men have significant improvement in their urinary symptoms after the Urolift procedure that is similar to or better than those typically achieved with medications.  In addition, no men experienced any significant side effects of treatment.

  • Men treated with Urolift did not experience problems with ejaculation. This compares favorably with medications commonly used for an enlarged prostate which often causes ejaculatory problems.
  • Men treated with Urolift experienced improved sexual satisfaction after 1 year compared to non-treated men.  This compares favorably to medications and other surgical treatments for BPH which tend to worsen sexual satisfaction in men over time.
  • Men treated with Urolift did not experience dizziness or stomach upset, common side effects of medications.

Who is a Candidate for the Urolift Procedure?

  1. Men who have symptoms of BPH and have not been treated
  2. Men who are currently taking medications for BPH and treatment of enlarged prostate who do not want to take daily medications and would rather have a one-time procedure
  3. Men who are taking medications for the treatment of BPH but whose symptoms are not improving or are worsening.
  4. Men who are considering other surgical treatment options for BPH but who are concerned about sexual side effects.

Urolift Procedure is now covered by major insurances and Medicare.

Urolift procedure is covered by many insurances. Medicare pays for the Urolift procedure for eligible men.

Most men are eligible for the Urolift procedure.  Urolift procedure successfully treats symptoms of an enlarged prostate for over 5 years.
