Optilume Treatment of Urinary Problems: What You Need to Know
Optilume is the newest procedure for the treatment of an enlarged prostate. Optilume is a very versatile procedure and can treat men who have an enlarged lateral or median lobe of the prostate.
Studies demonstrate significant improvement in urinary symptoms with >50% improvement in symptoms and 20% decrease in post-void volume, which means that the bladder empties better after the Optilume procedure.
Studies show that many men experience symptom improvement 2 and 5 years after treatment.
How is Optilume Performed?
Optilume can be performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. Usually, it is performed under IV sedation anesthesia. The procedure takes less than 1 hour. Usually, the patient can return home the same day. A urethral catheter is required for 3-5 days after the procedure.
The Optilume balloon is used for the dilation of the prostate, which also creates an anterior commissurotomy, thus “opening up” the prostate. Localized delivery of paclitaxel to the tissue obtains durable results. The mechanism of action essentially involves tearing the prostate to cause anterior commissurotomy to release the lateral lobes. Some bleeding is expected during and after the procedure.

Does Optilume Affect Sexual Function?
Studies demonstrate that Optilume does not affect erections or ejaculations. Most men report no change in erections or ejaculations. It should be noted that Optilume does not lead to improvement in ejaculation.
Does Optilume Treat Urinary Retention?
Optilume has not been tested for men with urinary retention; Optilume may work for some men with urinary retention who have relatively small prostate and good bladder function.
Did you know? Dr. Shteynshlyuger has performed over 1,000 surgeries and procedures for enlarged prostate, including Rezum, Urolift, prostate enucleation, laser ablation of the prostate, and TURP. He performs over 100 prostate procedures a year.
