What are the Advantages of Greenlight Laser?

Greenlight laser has been used for the treatment of enlarged prostate and BPH for over 15 years.  It has a number of advantages over other treatment options for BPH, including very good effectiveness in the treatment of symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

The Greenlight procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, with the patient going home the same day.  Patients with large prostates, including those with a prostate size larger than 100 grams, may be treated with Greenlight laser.

Two commonly performed procedures with Greenlight laser are Greenlight Photovaporization of the prostate (PVP) and Greenlight laser enucleation of the prostate (GreenLEP).

Treatment with Greenlight Laser is associated with less blood loss than with TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate).

Laser enucleation of the prostate is an alternative to the Greenlight ablation of the prostate. Laser enucleation offers greater benefit to men with large prostates.

The Effectiveness of Greenlight Laser

Studies persistently show that Greenlight Laser improves the urinary stream and improves the quality of life.  Men with frequent urination can expect to run to the bathroom less often.  Men with a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying are usually helped as well.  Men who experienced bleeding from the prostate before surgery are usually cured as well.

Greenlight PVP vs GreenLEP (laser enucleation)

Both Greenlight photo-vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and Greenlight laser enucleation of the prostate are effective in treating symptoms of an enlarged prostate.   Greenlight PVP is simpler to perform, and more urologists are comfortable using it.  GreenLEP requires more advanced skills to perform, and only some urologists perform GreenLEP.  For large prostates, GreenLEP allows the removal of a greater amount of prostate tissue, which leads to improved urine flow.  In addition, laser enucleation of the prostate retrieves prostate tissue for microscopic analysis. About 5-10% of men who undergo prostate surgery are found to have incidental prostate cancer in the removed prostate tissue.

Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is one of the few urologists in the New York area trained to perform laser enucleation of the prostate (LEP) as well as photo vaporization of the prostate (PV).  Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate is a commonly performed procedure that provides a similar improvement in symptoms as the GreenLEP.

Recovery after Greenlight Laser

Depending on the size of the prostate and the extent of the procedure, as well as the underlying anatomy and severity of preoperative symptoms, some men may not need a catheter after surgery.  Other men may require a urinary catheter for a few days to up to a few weeks.  There may be some blood in urine after surgery for the first few days to a few weeks.  Most men can return to office-type work within days after surgery.  Men who perform physical work may need to take a few weeks off to recover.
