What Treatment Options are Available if Prostate Microwave Therapy Did Not Work?
Prostate microwave therapy (TUMT) or cooled thermotherapy that is also known does not help a significant number of men. In addition, it tends to stop working within a few years of treatment.
For men who have failed treatment with prostate microwave therapy, a number of newer more effective treatment options are available. Depending on the prostate size and the severity of prostate symptoms, men who had previously been treated with microwave therapy may be good candidates for UroLift procedure, bipolar TURP, or holmium enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP).
Is There an Increased Risk of Complications if One has Additional Treatment after Microwave Therapy?
Prior treatment with the microwave therapy typically does not increase the risk of complications when another procedure such as Rezum therapy, UroLift procedure, bipolar TURP, or holmium laser enucleation of the prostate is performed.
How Successful are Minimally Invasive Treatments such as Urolift for BPH and Rezum after Microwave Therapy?
Depending on the size of the prostate and the severity of symptoms as well as several other factors, the UroLift procedure for BPH, iTind treatment, and Rezum procedure may be effective in as many as 80 to 90% of men who have previously failed microwave treatment for enlarged prostate (TUMT) with cooled thermotherapy.
How Successful are Surgical Treatments such as Prostate Enucleation and Greenlight Laser after Microwave Therapy?
Surgical procedures such as prostate enucleation with laser and Greenlight laser are very effective options for treating symptoms of enlarged prostate after microwave therapy failed. The great majority of men will experience significant urinary flow improvement, less frequent urination, and less urinary urgency after prostate enucleation or bipolar TURP.
Preferred Treatment Approach for Men Who Fail Microwave Therapy Treatment: New York Urology Specialists Experience
Men who have failed treatment with microwave therapy need to be evaluated to determine the cause of failure. Tests such as uroflowmetry, urodynamics, and cystoscopy may need to be performed. Post-void residual and prostate size may need to be measured. Typical causes of microwave therapy failure (TUMT) may be a large size prostate or an underlying bladder problem.
Appropriate treatment of the problem may include medications or surgical procedures such as the Rezum procedure or HOLEP.
