How Effective is Greenlight Laser for Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate?

Greenlight laser is a very effective treatment option for men with symptoms of enlarged prostate including urinary retention, frequent urination during the day, urinary urgency, slow urine stream and urination at night.

Greenlight laser of the prostate is effective for prostates that are small, medium size or large.  For very large prostate gland, prostate enucleation which can be done as Greenlight laser enucleation, or holmium laser enucleation (HoLAP)   is a more effective option then Greenlight PVP laser ablation of the prostate.

How Does Greenlight Laser PVP Compare to Other Options for Enlarged Prostate?

Greenlight laser photo vaporization of the prostate (PVP) compares favorably with other options for treatment for enlarged prostate such as bipolar TURP, Revolix laser, and Evolve laser for BPH.  Greenlight laser PVP is equally as effective as bipolar TURP, and Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HOLAP).  4.  Large prostate laser enucleation of the prostate is more advantageous than for a vaporization of the prostate as more tissue is typically removed.  Prostate laser enucleation can be performed with Greenlight laser, ProTouch laser, Holmium laser, Evolve laser as well as other lasers such as Thulium laser.

How Soon Can One Expect to See Improvement in Symptoms after Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy?

Improvements in urine flow are noticeable immediately after catheter removal, which usually occurs within a few days after Greenlight laser surgery for an enlarged prostate.  Patients who felt a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying typically find improvement in this symptom within a few weeks after surgery.

Symptoms such as urgency and frequent urination during the day and at night usually take 1-2 months to get better.  Typically, there is an increase in urinary frequency, urgency and burning with urination immediately after surgery which progressively improves over the first 1-2 weeks after surgery.  Split urine stream and strong urge to urinate may occur immediately after surgery but get better and eventually resolve over the first 1-2 months.

How Effective is Greenlight PVP Laser Therapy for Very Large Prostates >80 grams?

Greenlight photo vaporization (Greenlight PVP) of prostate shows good efficacy for very large prostate glands but requires additional treatment time in order to ablate sufficient tissue.  Newer high-energy Greenlight laser allows for effective treatment of larger prostates.

The success of Greenlight PVP in improving urine flow is greater than 90%, success in reducing urinary frequency, urge to pee and nocturia (urinating at night) also approaches 80-90% but may also require additional treatment for overactive bladder symptoms.

Typically, the flow is doubled, the residual volume after urination the bladder is reduced.  Overall, patients are very satisfied after Greenlight laser prostatectomy.  Satisfaction is directly related to the severity of initial symptoms; the more severe the initial symptoms the greater is the noticeable improvement and the more satisfied patients tend to be.

Laser enucleation the of prostate with Greenlight laser, Pro touch laser or Thulium laser allows a more complete removal of prostate tissue than photo-vaporization and preferred for very large prostates.  This is particularly relevant to patients in urinary retention and younger men who have a long life expectancy during which the prostate is expected to regrow.
