Why Does Penile Shortening Occur After Circumcision?
There are a number of reasons for penile shortening after circumcision. Some reasons are related to circumcision and other reasons may be incidental.
Penile shortening is rare after circumcision. Usually, it’s a matter of perception as the penis may look appear shorter without a foreskin.
The most common cause of penile shortening after circumcision is related to the removal of the excessive foreskin, commonly referred to as “tight circumcision“. Lack of extra skin that occurs in some men with poorly compliant skin leads to a lack of penile shaft expansion with an erection.
Penoscrotal webbing is frequently associated with penile shortening and requires treatment as well.
Buried penis in obese men is another common cause of ‘pseudo’ penile shortening. The penile length is ‘hidden’ in the fat pad above the penis.
Treatment of Penile Shortening after Circumcision.
Treatment usually requires the reconstitution of adequate skin when the amount of skin is inadequate. The exact approach depends on the availability of local skin and may involve skin flaps or grafts
For men with penoscrotal web, the correction of penoscrotal webbing may be necessary if the web causes functional problems or aesthetic concerns.
