Xiaflex vs Verapamil Injections: Effectiveness
There are no studies that have directly compared the effectiveness of Xiaflex (collagenase) to verapamil injections for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease.
Based on the indirect comparison, it appears that both Xiaflex and verapamil injections have some efficacy in Peyronie’s disease. It is likely that Xiaflex may be somewhat more effective for some men than Verapamil, in particular for men with an early disease with a minimally calcified palpable plaque.
Both Xiaflex and verapamil appear to work best for men with less calcified Peyronie’s plaques.
Typically, both Xiaflex and verapamil lead to improvement rather than complete resolution of penile curvature.
Cost of Treatment Xiaflex vs Verapamil
Verapamil injections are fairly inexpensive with the total cost of around $500-700 for a course of six injections. Xiaflex is a fairly expensive medication with a course of the treatment cost of greater than $30,000. Xiaflex is usually covered by health insurance.
Side Effects: Verapamil vs Xiaflex Injections
Verapamil injections typically cause few if any side effects. Occasionally a small ‘black-and-blue’ spot can appear at the site of injection that goes away in a week or two.
Xiaflex can cause more pronounced swelling around the penis; it can also cause more notable ‘black and blue‘ areas both on the penis and sometimes on the scrotum or the lower abdomen. This is transient and disappears typically within 1-2 weeks.
In rare situations, Xiaflex can lead to ‘penile fracture’, which occurs <1% of the time but requires surgical treatment.
Patients need to stop blood-thinners prior to Xiaflex administration.
