What is Verapamil?
Verapamil is a medication from a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It is useful in many conditions including for treatment of high blood pressure. It was also found to be useful in treating men with Peyronie’s disease.
Is All Verapamil Created Equal?
Only verapamil injected directly into Peyronie’s plaque has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. Oral verapamil pills are not effective for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. Verapamil in cream form is not effective for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease as it does not penetrate the skin deep enough to reach the Peyronie’s plaque.
Intra-lesional Verapamil Injections Have an Excellent Record of Effectiveness and Safety.
Verapamil injections have been used for more than 30 years to treat men with Peyronie’s disease. The injections are nearly painless (we administer local pain medication prior to giving injections in the penis).
Verapamil is inexpensive and has good efficacy with at least 20-30% of men experiencing a significant improvement in symptoms and/or curvature.
We usually advise using verapamil injections in combination with penile traction therapy and oral therapy.
How Often Are Verapamil Injections Given?
Typically, the course of treatment with verapamil injections is 6 injections spaced two weeks apart. The entire treatment takes about 12 weeks. It is safe to skip a week or two and resume the next dose of the medication if needed (vacations/busy, etc). Injections do not have to be given precisely 2 weeks apart – the schedule can be altered without loss of efficacy.
If, after the first course of Verapamil significant improvement is noted, the course of treatment can be repeated.
If there is no benefit after 6 injections, additional injections are unlikely to help and a different treatment approach should be tried.
Risks and Side Effects of Verapamil Injections
Verapamil injections are very safe when administered by an experienced urologist. Usually, a local anesthetic is given and the injection of verapamil is usually painless. Slight hematoma (bleeding) can occur occasionally but goes away within a week or two. Some men choose not to have a local anesthetic with verapamil injections.
Verapamil Injections vs Topical Verapamil Cream
Topical verapamil (cream/gel) has no benefit in the treatment of men with Peyronie’s disease. To be effective, verapamil needs to be injected directly into Peyronie’s plaque.
Treatment Options When Verapamil Injections Do Not Help
If verapamil injections do not provide sufficient benefit, Xiaflex injections, interferon injections, penile plication, as well as plaque incision/grafting or penile implant, offer effective treatment for Peyronie’s.
Verapamil Cost and Insurance Coverage
Verapamil injections are covered by some insurances but not by all insurances. Unfortunately, because verapamil injections are used ‘off-label’ for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease we usually have to submit the claim and see if insurance will cover it. Fortunately, the injections are not too expensive as far as medications go.

Treatment Options if Verapamil Did Not Work
For men who had been treated with verapamil injections but did not experience a significant benefit, a few treatment options are available. Usually, doing additional courses of verapamil after the initial 6 injections that did not work is unlikely to lead to success. Other treatment options include injections with Xiaflex or interferon, or surgical treatment with penile plication, penile implant, or plaque excision.

I saw the reviews about this place and was very hesitant to go but something was telling me to go with them and I don't regret it at all, the doctor did a great job and helped me understand the process plus the staff was amazing I would highly recommend it to anyone! quick story after the procedure I was in soo much pain and called the office on a SUNDAY, the doctor gave me a call back within 15 minutes and prescribed a stronger medication, to me that meant a lot for the doctor to take time from his day on a Sunday to help me.

I am a 54 year-old male who is extremely happy with my care at New York Urology Specialists. I came to see Dr. Alex out of near desperation after consulting with three other urologists. Literally over one night, I began experiencing severe penile pain and burning. None of the other urologists were able to help diagnose what my problem was and seemingly didn't take my problem very seriously. In fact, one of them specifically told me at it had nothing to do with my prostate. After 6 weeks of suffering, I saw Dr. Alex. He examined me and gave me some tests and lab work. He very quickly ascertained that my problem was due to an enlarged prostate. He proscribed medicine to deal with my pain in the short-term and keep my prostate size in check over the long-term. My problem quickly disappeared. Today, 5 years later, I feel great. Dr, Alex listens to you as a patient, takes your opinion and health concerns seriously and knows his field inside-and-out so that you can get proper treatment for your problem. I can't thank him enough for diagnosing and solving my malady - you sometimes can't appreciate a problem until you have it. Getting rid of it and getting back to normal is so important - I am so glad that I saw Dr. Alex for my problem.
