Teen and Adolescent circumcision
We perform circumcision on teenage boys and adolescent young men. Circumcision can be done under local anesthesia in the office settings or under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical center.
In general, we require, with few exceptions, that children understand why they are getting circumcision done and want to have it done.
- Children under age 18 cannot sign their own consent for circumcision. Parents must sign the consent and be present with them for the procedure.
- If the child has any hesitancy whether or not he wants to have circumcision our approach is to revisit the issue when the patient (child) decides that he definitely wants it, unless there is a significant health issue involved (infection, pain, bleeding, obstruction of the urinary tract).
- Parental or family pressure does not lead to good outcomes.
- The only exception is when there is a clear and obvious medical need (phimosis, balanitis, paraphimosis, etc).

Teenage and adolescent children who are not emotionally mature, who are anxious or have a low threshold for pain, should have the circumcision performed under general anesthesia as they are not good candidates to have it performed under local anesthesia.
