Tight Frenulum (Frenulum Breve) – Cause of Penile Pain During Sex
Short or Tight Frenulum
Short or tight frenulum of the penis can cause pain during sex. It may also cause bleeding during sex if it tears during intercourse. Pain, in turn, may cause erectile dysfunction, as many men lose an erection as a result of pain.
Pain in the penis during sex can also occur in men with phimosis. Typically pain from tight frenulum is felt only in the area of the frenulum. Pain caused by phimosis is more diffuse and circumferential (felt around the penis).
Tight Frenulum as a Cause of Bleeding During Sex in Men
The short frenulum may also lead to micro-trauma and bleeding during sex. This typically occurs in the area of the frenulum but in men with phimosis can occur in other areas of the penis. Treatment Options for Short or Tight Frenulum of the Penis
Short frenulum of the penis can be treated by performing penile frenuloplasty (or frenulectomy) alone or frenuloplasty in combination with circumcision.
If frenulum breve is the only problem, frenuloplasty alone is all that is needed to address the problem.
If there is a coexisting problem such as phimosis or recurrent balanitis, circumcision with frenuloplasty will address both problems.
Men who desire circumcision for hygienic or cosmetic reasons can also have a circumcision performed together with frenuloplasty. It comes down to the question of whether the man wants to have a circumcision at the same time or not.
How Effective is Frenuloplasty for Treatment of Frenulum Breve of the Penis?
Penile frenuloplasty is more than 95% effective in treating tight frenulum of the penis. There is a less than 5% chance that a re-do frenuloplasty procedure will be required.
