What to Expect after Penile Implant Surgery: Does the Penile Implant Affect Feeling and Sensation in the Penis?

Feeling and Sensation in the Penis and During Sex after Penile Implant Surgery

Penile prosthesis surgery treats men who are unable to obtain erections that are sufficiently hard for sexual intercourse.  Penile implants allow men to obtain erections that are hard enough for penetration and therefore allow for satisfactory sexual intercourse for both the patient and their partner.

Penile Implant Surgery and Nerves in the Penis

A penile implant is usually inserted through a penoscrotal incision which is far away from the nerves of the penis that affect the feeling and sensation of the penis, skin, and glans penis. This means that it is not possible to damage the nerves to the penis from implant surgery as performed at New York Urology Specialists.

Patients with Peyronie’s disease (penile curvature) who require extensive plaque excision and grafting may experience a temporary loss of penile sensation after surgery if the surgery was performed in the area of the nerves of the penis (neurovascular bundle). Typically, men regain normal sensation within 6 to 12 months after surgery.

Penile Implant and Libido

Many men with erectile dysfunction also suffer from a low sexual drive (low libido). Low sexual drive is a complicated problem with many causes. Low sex drive may be caused by hormonal abnormalities, such as low testosterone, low thyroid levels, and high prolactin levels among others. Stress, including depression, may contribute to poor sex drive. Chronic medical problems may also cause low sex drive. In many cases, we cannot be certain what the causes of low libido are in some men.

Penile implants allow men to obtain erections sufficient for sexual intercourse. A penile implant by itself does not improve or worsen sexual interest. In some men with low sex drive caused by an inability to obtain erections, the improved self-esteem that results from an ability to obtain good erections with a penile implant may improve libido.

Neuropathy and Penile Feeling

Many men with erectile dysfunction may also be affected by neuropathy (altered sensation). Neuropathy may cause decreased sensation in the penis and other organs. Men with diabetes, neurological problems, including multiple sclerosis, and spinal trauma may have absent or abnormal sensation in the penis. While the penile implant can make the penis hard, it does not treat neuropathy and will not improve sensation in the penis in men with pre-existing neuropathy causing decreased or absent penile sensation.
