What to Expect: Recovering from Hydrocelectomy

Diet

You can eat and drink normally after hydrocelectomy. Social alcohol consumption is permitted 1-2 days after the procedure, provided it is done responsibly, of course.

Exercise and Gym

Men may return to the gym 2 weeks after hydrocelectomy. We advise no biking or any other type of exercise that involves the scrotum for 1 month after hydrocelectomy.

Showering

You may shower 24 hours after the surgery. We recommend patting the incision dry and avoiding baths for the first week.

Sex

You may resume sexual activity 2-3 weeks after hydrocele repair, as long as the scrotal incision is healing well.

Beach, Pool, Swimming

We advise against going to the beach or swimming in a pool, ocean, river, or lake for 3-4 weeks after hydrocele repair to avoid the risks of infection.

Wound Care and Stitches

No special wound care is needed. We use self-resorbing sutures (stitches) that typically fall off on their own 3-6 weeks after the procedure.

Travel after Hydrocelectomy 

Patients who are not from New York City can travel the same day or the next day after hydrocele repair.

Scrotal Size after Hydrocele Repair

For men with large hydroceles, the redundant scrotum typically shrinks within 3-6 months of the procedure. If scrotal redundancy is still of concern 6 months after hydrocelectomy, scrotal reduction surgery may be undertaken.
