Peyronie’s Disease after Penile Injections: What You Need to Know
Penile injections with medications such as Edex, Caverject, and Trimix is an effective treatment for men with erectile dysfunction.
15 to 20% of men develop signs of Peyronie’s disease after prolonged use of penile injections for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Common signs of Peyronie’s disease include the curved penis, Peyronie’s plaque, hourglass appearance, and penile shortening.
The needles used for penile injections are very small and cause minimal damage or scar formation. However, over time and repeated use, scarring may develop in the penis. Men with erectile dysfunction are likely predisposed to Peyronie’s disease due to impaired vascular supply to the penis. Adequate vascular supply is essential to self-healing of tissues in the body; poor blood flow to the penis in men with ED likely increased the risk of Peyronie’s disease.
Most men who use penile injections do so because oral medications such as tadalafil (Cialis) and sildenafil (Viagra) do not work sufficiently well. In this situation, the only options available are to proceed with a penile implant or to try penile injections. There is no significant downside from using injections in this situation even if it results in the development of Peyronie’s disease.
If Peyronie’s disease is severe enough to require surgical treatment they would undergo penile implant surgery that they would have otherwise needed if they chose not to use penile injections.
