When it comes to the treatment of erectile dysfunction – New York Urology Specialists are a step ahead.  Better Science Means Better Care.

Imagine an innovative treatment for ED that does not require medications, no surgery and no need to buy any devices to use at home.  Sounds futuristic but it’s now available at New York Urology Specialists.  The treatment is called Shock Wave Therapy. The technical name is Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LISWT) for ED.  This is the same concept we have used successfully for the treatment of kidney stones.

Shockwave for ED

Shockwave for Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Studies show that an outpatient office treatment with EDSWT (Erectile Dysfunction Shock Wave Therapy) permanently improves erection quality in men.  The shock wave therapy treatment involves 20-minute treatment sessions.

While the results are not directly comparable, for many men the benefits may be as good as those obtained with many other treatments such as Cialis and Viagra.

Shockwave therapy for ED may also be used together with medications to improve the quality of erections in men who do not respond well to Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.

Many men may stop needing medications such as Viagra and Cialis after treatment with Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LISWT).  Shockwave therapy can be used with Cialis to achieve better erections.

The treatment works for men with vascular ED by improving vascular responsiveness.

Who is a Good Candidate for EDSWT (Shockwave for ED) or LISWT-ED?

Men with erection problems such as difficulty obtaining an erection, problems with keeping an erection, and whose erections are not sufficiently hard for sex can benefit from ED-SWT if ED problems are caused by vascular problems.  Usually, men with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, kidney failure, and heart disease have vascular ED and can benefit from ED-SWT.  However, many men that we see are not aware that they may have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.  Every patient that we see undergoes a thorough evaluation.

Storz, MediSpec ED-1000 and Renova system for ED are three systems that are used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.  At New York Urology Specialists we use the most effective Storz shockwave therapy.

Men with diabetes and ED, as well as high blood pressure and ED are good candidates for shockwave therapy.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for Shockwave Therapy for ED?

Men who take blood thinners such as Coumadin, Lovenox and Xarelto, Pradaxa, Apixaban (Eliquis) are not good candidates for shockwave treatment unless they can stop the medication for the duration of treatment.

Men with non-vascular causes of ED are not good candidates for ED-SWT because it is unlikely to help.  This includes men with ED caused by anxiety, stress, low testosterone levels.  Men with ED caused by medication side effects (anti-depressants; SSRI) or men with neurological problems (multiple sclerosis) are not good candidates.  If men have both vascular problems and non-vascular problems, shockwave therapy can be tried.

Does Shockwave for ED Work for Everyone?

Shockwave therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction works for many men with mild-to-moderate ED caused by vascular causes (high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, vascular disease).  If oral medications such as Viagra, Cialis, and Stendra help even if not completely, shockwave therapy for ED is likely to work. As many as 50-70% of men are able to obtain erections without the need for medications such as Viagra and Cialis after treatment with shockwave therapy for ED

If oral medications do not help at all, it is unlikely that ED-SWT can produce sufficient benefit to allow you to obtain erections without medications. However many men for whom medications do not work may be able to get better function and obtain sufficient erections with medications after treatment with shockwave therapy.  Men with severe ED in particular if caused by severe venous leak need to consider other treatment options.

This is a major reason that men come to New York Urology Specialists for the second opinion after shockwave therapy performed elsewhere (Gainswave, Men’s Health Clinics, Boston Medical, etc) did not work.

What are the Treatment Options if ED-SWT (Shockwave therapy for ED) Does Not Work?

If shockwave therapy for ED does not work, men can use medications (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil), penile injections and inflatable penile implant for treatment of ED.

Some men who may be good candidates for shockwave based on our evaluation may not have received an adequate trial of shockwave, shockwave may have been performed with sub-optimal non-FDA approved equipment, and repeat trial of shockwave therapy may be considered.
